Despite careful preparations and a heavy preliminary bombardment, progress was disappointingly slow; the Germans had become aware of the impending attack and had rushed reinforcements to bolster their already formidable defense. Pershing's attack ground to a halt in just four days. After some reorganization and the appointment of a new commander, Gen. Hunter Liggett, the Americans tried again. This time, with fresh divisions at the forefront supported by over 300 tanks and 500 aircraft, the offensive began to gain ground.
